Why Wornall Homestead?
Wornall Homestead is located in the Brookside area of Kansas City, Missouri. Bounded by 57th Street, Wornall Road, 63rd Street, and the Trolley Trail, we have many historic homes and wonderful neighbors. The neighborhood takes its name from The John Wornall House, a brick homestead built in 1858 which still stands today and is open for tours. Like the Wornall House, many of the homes in our neighborhood were built over 100 years ago, cared for, and restored to their original glory.
We are fortunate to be surrounded by so many other historic neighborhoods, all charming in their own right. There is Countryside to the North, Brookside Park to the Northeast, Morningside to the Southeast, Greenway Fields to the Southwest, and Country Club to the Northwest.
The neighborhoods around us make up an area of the city called Brookside, a historic, walkable district with many local shops and amenities. Wornall Homestead is situated approximately one mile south of the famous Country Club Plaza and just two blocks away from 75-acre Loose Park and its famous Rose Garden.
The Brookside area and surrounding neighborhoods make up what is collectively known as the Country Club District, a world-renowned residential district that is the largest planned community built by a single developer, J.C. Nichols in the United States. His planning philosophy was influenced by other famous neighborhoods throughout the country, such as Beverly Hills. Its characteristics include a grid street layout while maintaining the preservation of trees and natural contours. Today, we enjoy this timeless design and character.
What’s Walkable?
The 6.5-mile Trolley Track Trail forms the eastern border of Wornall Homestead and was built along a former streetcar line. The trail's gradual elevation changes make it ideal for biking and walking.
Loose Park is a 75-acre park that borders 55th street, two blocks from Wornall Homestead. It is the third largest park in the city, and features inner and outer perimeter trails, tennis courts, a large shelter, picnic tables, a splash park, the famous Rose Garden, a garden center, and other amenities.
Head north on Wornall Road and you’ll find the Country Club Plaza, just one mile from Wornall Homestead. "The Plaza,” as it is affectionately called by Kansas Citians, is a 55-acre outdoor shopping district modeled after Seville, Spain. There are plenty of options for shopping, dining, and sightseeing, with large fountains, trails along Brush Creek, and statues throughout.
Just two blocks south on Wornall Road are the Brookside shops. Here you’ll find tons of local boutiques and restaurants, as well as some typical services like a barber shop, grocery store, bank, and tennis courts
Northeast of Wornall Homestead, at 55th and Brookside Boulevard, are the Crestwood Shops, featuring charming cafes and boutiques.
We also have a small 1.5 acre park inside our neighborhood with lighting and a children’s playground. Nearby is Brookside Park. A popular destination for sledding, as well as featuring tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a baseball diamond and a children's playground.
A few great schools are all within a mile of Wornall Homestead as well. These include Académie Lafayette (Public Charter), Border Star Montessori (Public), Pembroke Hill Lower School (Private), Visitation (Private Parochial), and St. Teresa’s Academy (Private).
What’s a Short Drive?
Wornall Homestead is in the center of it all! Get downtown in ten minutes by heading North on Southwest Trafficway or Broadway, go West for a couple of minutes to get to Kansas, head south on Wornall to get to I-435 and connect to the suburbs, or take a five-minute drive East to get to Highway 71 for accessing the Missouri suburbs and the stadiums.
The Waldo area, just a couple miles South and centered on 75th Street and Wornall, is full of charming houses and a large business district, including local favorites such as Waldo Pizza, The Well, Bier Station, and Kansas City Bier Company.
A few miles East of us is the 1800 acre crown jewel of the Kansas City Parks system. Swope Park contains the Kansas City Zoo and Starlight Theater, as well as tennis courts, trails, soccer fields, playgrounds, a disc golf course, a nature center, museums, a cricket field, and the PGA event caliber public golf course Swope Memorial, among other amenities.
